‘Flying high’ is illustrated with a painting of a magpie by artist Sally Titterington, with whom I’ve previously worked on live music/art performances.
The Magpie carries an old saying ‘one for sorrow, two for joy etc.’; and is known to be a very intelligent creature.
The themes of the compositions were inspired by an idea from artist Claire Layman, based loosely on the book by Dr Mark Burgman, to use the power of group dynamics in a new approach to art. I wrote 4 pieces depicting different emotional states. The intent is for a diverse group of visual artists to join forces and, inspired by the music, work together to choose colours and frame abstract pieces reflecting their emotions. The emerging work will be called ‘Wisdom of Art’.
Part of the musical composition was driven by the idea of grief, loss and the process of ‘letting go’.
These compositions will form part of a performance piece called 'Good Grief' where dancers create movement to the pieces. My collaborator Sally will create live art work which will be projected though-out the dance performance as well as Azul Strings performing alongside myself.
My music is inspired by some great musicians. They include John Coltrane and his track Alabama, Brian Eno, The The, Stan Getz, Wayne Shorter, Jan Garbreck Oregan, Weather Report, McCoy Tyner, Fela Kuti, Nathan Johnson, George Fenton, Rone and Vanessa Wagner.
The string quartet Azul Strings performed on all 4 tracks. I provide the piano, synths and saxophone, with more piano added by Natalio Faingold, a friend and prolific composer from Argentina.
